2023 Exhibition Series: The story so far

The top talent in Alberta and the Atlantic provinces are taking advantage of the opportunity to showcase their skills via two new exhibition series this year.

First up was an announcement by Alberta Soccer in April that they would be staging a men’s and women’s exhibition series featuring five teams. The tournament started in mid-May and Born To Be Soccer Club, Calgary Foothills, Edmonton Scottish United, and St Albert Impact are competing in both leagues. They are joined in the men’s competition by Cavalry FC U21 and Calgary Blizzard in the women’s.

Later in April, as a follow up to the strong interest shown in establishing League1 Atlantic, Suburban Football Club (Nova Scotia), Winsloe Charlottetown Royals (Prince Edward Island), and the Fredericton Picaroons Reds (New Brunswick) announced they would stage an exhibition series among themselves during the spring and summer months. The Maritime Super Series games are taking place across three weekends in the three provinces.

Both competitions kicked off last month, within a fortnight of each other, and are already generating plenty of interest and excitement.

League1 Alberta Exhibition Series

After four rounds of games, BTB Soccer Club lead the way in the men’s competition with a 100 per cent record after starting with wins over Cavalry U21 and Edmonton Scottish. They are followed by Calgary Foothills, who are also unbeaten, having opened the series with a 1-1 tie with Edmonton Scottish and a win over St Albert Impact, who are third.

Edmonton Scottish and Cavalry U21 have played a game more than those three teams above them and both are seeking their first win of the season.

In the women’s competition, Calgary Blizzard top the table with seven points, ahead of Calgary Foothills, St Albert Impact, and BTB Soccer Club, who are all three points behind. Edmonton Scottish are bottom after losing their opening three games.

The next round of games takes place on June 9.

Maritime Super Series

The honour to kickoff the series fell to the women’s teams of Suburban and Winsloe Charlottetown Royals, who took away a point each after the game finished 1-1. Winsloe also tied with Fredericton Reds by the same scoreline in their second game, but Suburban moved onto four points after beating Fredericton 3-1 thanks to Sydney Kennedy’s first-half hat-trick.

Suburban FC also lead the men’s league with two wins from two, while Fredericton Reds beat Winslow 1-0 to leave the Royals without any points from their two games.

The teams will meet again between June 16 and 18 in Fredericton.
